Paul Mashegoane

CEO of Artificial Intelligence Group

Paul Mashegoane is the Founding Director of Artificial Intelligence Group. Currently, he is a Chairman of GloCentric and Director of numerous companies.

He was on the Board of Directors of BrainBoosters and Index Solutions and he led Cloud 9 Capital which was a shareholder in the latter.

Paul contributed to leading global media companies, namely Forbes Africa and Huffington Post in New York. Majoring in areas of macro-economics, technological trends and entrepreneurship.

From time to time Paul speaks at a number of international conferences, and he was the Chairman of African Oil and Gas Summit; he regularly goes around meeting prominent global leaders discussing matters of concern. He was also a Deputy Chairman of South African Youth for International Diplomacy, and did short courses in Business Management.

Dr Iraj Abedian

Dr Iraj Abedian

CEO of Pan-African Capital Holdings

Currently he is the founder and Chief Executive of Pan-African Capital Holdings Proprietary Limited.

He is the Chairman of Fortress Income Fund, Automated Outsourcing Services, Index Solutions and was of Bigen Africa.

Dr Abedian holds a PhD in economics from Simon Fraser University, Canada.

He was a professor of economics at University of Cape Town (UCT) before joining Standard Bank as Group Chief Economist in 2000. He was extensively involved in macroeconomic and financial policy as well as institutional restructuring of South Africa’s public policy after 1994 and currently holds past and present board positions at some of South Africa’s most important companies and institutions.

Dr Abedian is a prolific researcher and has written numerous articles and co-authored a number of books. He is an honorary Professor of Economics at Graduate School of Business, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, Port Elizabeth.

Dr Lelau Mohuba

CEO of Sephaku Holdings

Lelau is a Founding Director and CEO of Sephaku Holdings.

 He became the original chairman on 3 February 2005 and became CEO on 28 March 2012. He retired as a medical practitioner in 2001 after a 22-year career. His commercial career began in 2002 and since then he has served in various capacities in several entrepreneurial endeavours.

Currently serves as Chairperson at Insa Coal Holdings, Incubex Minerals, Sephaku Cement, Taung Gold, Métier Mixed Concrete, Sephaku Fluoride and Miranda Mineral Holdings.

He served as the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Shikisha Tyre and Rubber, a JV with Goodyear Holdings, and Executive Director of Boynton Platinum. Dr Mohuba is a founder of Lekgotla Investments and Kiba Investment Holdings.

Ian Lourens

CEO of OneLogix Group

Ian Lourens, BA (Hons), MBA, serves as the Chief Executive Officer of OneLogix Group, a JSE listed holding company, that consist of 12 logistics related companies with over 800 trucks.

He is the Co-Founder of PostNet Southern Africa (Pty) Limited and Cash Converters, well-known companies in South Africa. He previously served as Brand Manager of Beecham and Marketing Manager at Hoechst. 

Mr Lourens is a former Mayor of Midrand and past Chairman of the Franchise Association of Southern Africa. He is a veteran entrepreneur who finds building companies to notable sizes, a quest he is passionate about.

Dr Namane Magau

Dr Namane Magau

Director of Companies

Dr Namane Magau holds a doctorate in education from Harvard University, and has been the chairperson of the NTP Radioisotopes board since 2014.

Currently, she also serves on several Boards and is Board Chairman of Izakhiwo Imfundo Trust and Bertha Gxowa Foundation. She also serves on the UCT Graduate School of Business Advisory, RULA and Agility Health Care Solution Boards.

Past boards on which she served include Murray & Roberts, Merrill Lynch South Africa and Santam. Dr Magau owns a Consulting Company B&D Solutions and in the consulting work and her role on Boards, she draws from her past experiences as an executive director in companies and educator.

Her past management and executive roles include the senior management position at the Development Bank of South Africa (DBSA) as a Director in the Human Resource Policy division. From the DBSA she joined the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) as the Executive Vice President for Human Capital. After five years at the CSIR she became part of the executive team at the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC).

The experiences she had in designing policy for National Programs like the HR strategy for the RDP and guiding the development of management systems and programs for the science and innovation systems at the CSIR extended her understanding of promoting performance of organizations through engaging people at all levels and using efficient information management systems.

As an educator, she is also passionate about the development of others and has therefore been active in women development programs and was President of Business Women’s Association (BWA), as well as President of International Women’s Forum South Africa (IWFSA). She also mentors young leaders, a role that she finds very enriching and inspiring.

MR. Thapelo Tsheole

CEO of Botswana Stock Exchange

Mr Tsheole is a seasoned Financial Markets expert with a cumulative experience of over 17 years having worked for the Central Bank Bank of Botswana and Botswana Stock Exchange Limited (BSEL).

Mr Tsheole holds a Bachelor of Social Sciences (Single Major Economics) from the University of Botswana and a Master of Commerce (MComm) in Financial Markets from Rhodes University (RSA). Further, he holds a Masters Degree in Business Administration (MBA) from the Graduate School of Business, University of Cape Town (RSA). He has also completed several financial markets programmes as well as a Leadership Development Programme at the University of Stellenbosch Business School (RSA).

Mr Tsheole has extensive financial markets experience in Capital Markets, Forex, Structured Products and the Financial Market Regulation. He was appointed CEO of BSEL in January 2016 having been Deputy CEO since February 2014.

Mr Tsheole is a firm believer in the development of the financial market in Botswana and Africa, as well as their importance to economic growth and stability and has led initiatives to increase activity in the financial market in Botswana. In recognition of his exceptional and devoted service to Botswana he was awarded the Presidential Order of Meritorious Service by His Excellency the President of the Republic of Botswana in September 2018.

Mr Tsheole is the Chairman of the Committee of SADC Stock Exchanges (CoSSE), and an Executive Committee member of the African Securities Exchanges Association (ASEA). He also sits on the following Boards; Botswana Accountancy Oversight Authority, Medicines Regulatory Authority of Botswana, and Special Economic Zones Authority (SEZA) where he is the Chairman. As a result of his extensive experience he serves as a member of Africa Integrated Reporting Committee (AIRC), a joint initiative between Pan African Federation of Accountants (PAFA) and World Bank since July, 2017.

MD of The Banking Association of South Africa

Cas Coovadia is currently the Managing Director of The Banking Association South Africa
(BASA).

He is the Chairperson of the National Business Initiative and Treasurer of the African Union for Housing Finance and also serves on the Board of the Centre for Development and Enterprise. He is also First Deputy-President of the International Union for Housing Finance (IUHF). He served as the President of the IUHF for five years. He serves as a Council
member of the University of Witwatersrand. He is also on the board of the Nepad Business Foundation and the Board of Business Unity South Africa. He is also the Chairman of the Johannesburg Development Agency, a corporatized entity of the City of Joburg. Cas represents BASA on the Board of the International Banking Federation (IBFeD). BASA is the only African association of banks that is a member of IBFeD.

Cas is also Chairman of FinmarkTrust and of Operation Hope SA. He is the immediate past chairman of The Johannesburg Civic Theatre and Vice Chairperson of the Trust for Urban Housing Finance.

He has played a central role in the negotiations leading to the signing of the Financial Sector Charter and is playing a critical role in the implementation of agreements reached in the Charter. He is responsible for the operations of the organization, which is the mandated representative of all licensed banks in South Africa, national and global. BASA also acts as the Secretariat for the SADC Banking Association. BASA represents the banking industry on all matters pertinent to the industry in which banks are able to collaborate.

Cas obtained his B.Com from the University College – Durban in 1971. He completed the Housing Finance Course with the Wharton Real Estate Centre at the University of Pennsylvania. He also completed the Effective Directors Programme with the Kagiso School of Leadership. He has contributed to numerous articles and publications on housing finance, civil society, local government and the role of civic organisations in governance.

The gentleman was instrumental in the conceptualisation and establishment of theCommunity of Bank in South Africa and is passionate about the area of access to financial services to the broad spectrum of people in South Africa. He has considerable experience in housing finance, SMME support, local government restructuring, dynamics of organised
business and the financial environment in the SADC region.

He served articles for training as a chartered accountant and ran an accounting practice for a number of years. He also spent time with the Kagiso Group managing a small venture capital company that invested in emerging manufacturing enterprises. He is thus proficient in the financial environment and able to get on top of issues fairly quickly.

Cas is married to Sabera Bobat and has a daughter by the name of Nabeelah. He has a son, Yusuf, from a previous marriage.

He joined the Trek for Mandela expedition in 2016 because The Banking Association SA has been a sponsor of the initiative for a number of years. He felt it would help the fundraising effort if he joined the expedition.

Dr Ahmed Ali

Dr Ali is known for his interests in Artificial Intelligence, Optimization, Machine learning – to name a few – he is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Johannesburg.

Prior to this, he received his MSc degree in Electrical Engineering, and went on to pursue and obtain his PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of Johannesburg.

Furthermore, he did one year successful experience in (CDMA): CODE DIVISION MULTIPLE ACCESS; another year experience in (GSM): GLOBAL SYSTEM FOR MOBILE COMMUNICATION; and one more year course in Data Mining from York University (UK).

Dr Ali is experienced in Electrical and Computer Science Programming. PSPICE, MATLAB, Octave, R, Python, PROTEUS, C++ programming and JAVA, and programming by a ladder-logic diagram.

Among projects he did was a modern power grids gather energy from multiple energy sources which include wind, solar, and coal. Operating and managing massive power grids systems have become more complex. Artificial Intelligence has helped increase efficiency and stability to these energy sources through its ability to analyse large data-sets in a short timeframe. This has led to the development of smart grids, which are designed to handle multiple energy sources at the same time efficiently.

Dr Simo Lushaba

Dr Simo Lushaba is the Managing Director of Talent Growth Partners (Pty) Ltd a consulting firm focusing on strategy, leadership development, executive coaching, performance and governance.

 During his career, Dr Lushaba has worked as a General Manager Operations at Spoornet, Chief Executive at Rand Water and Vice President at Lonmin plc. 

Presently, he is a Non-Executive Director on the Boards of Harmony Gold Ltd, Cashbuild Ltd, and South Africa Day (NPC). He is also Non-Executive Chairman of Signium Africa. Dr Lushaba was previously a director at Trans Caledon Tunnel Agency, Water Research Commission, a member of Council - University of Johannesburg, Presidential Review Committee on State-owned Enterprises, and a Trustee at Nepad Business Foundation. He was Chairman of the Board of South African Post Office (SOC) Ltd (also an Administrator responsible for stabilising the organization and developing its turnaround plan), Spescom (Ltd) and Pikitup Johannesburg (Pty) Ltd. 

Dr Lushaba has a Doctor of Business Administration from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, a Masters in Business Administration from the University of Wales, a Bachelor of Science (Honors) in Advanced Biochemistry from the University of Zululand (UZ) and a Bachelor of Science Chemistry and Advanced Biochemistry from the University of Zululand (UZ). He also has a Post-Graduate Diploma in Company Directions from GMIT and (IoDSA) and is a Chartered Director South Africa (CDSA) registered with the Institute of Directors (IoDSA).

Dr Satyakama Paul

Dr Satyakama Paul is an expert in the domain of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning.

 He has a PhD and a Post-Doctoral degree from the Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment at the University of Johannesburg in the area of Computational Intelligence.

Prior to his PhD, he obtained a Master's degree in Business Administration from India.

He started his journey in Artificial Intelligence in 2011 and has since worked with data from various domains – ranging from financial, to energy, to banking and insurance data. He regularly publishes papers in peer reviewed academic conferences and journals in the area of Machine Learning.

Dr Paul is an end-to-end full stack product developer and enjoys working on various aspects of the Machine Learning work cycle such as requirement gathering, database management, choice and decision of the best algorithm to carry out a particular task, design of User Interfaces etc.

He also loves tinkering with electronic equipment and has filed a patent that integrates sensors, Arduino devices and Machine Learning techniques to automatically forecast a dam's water level and forecast its hazard level.
